Taupo is a great place for adventures.
A ride on the rapid jet can give you a thrill of a life time. I just did had a go on Saturday and loved it.

That’s the hotel you want to stay while exploring this fantastic region. It’s really close to several walks, like the ones you’ll see in the pictures below. My favourite one is a 20-minute walk to see the icebergs!
You can stay instead in Twizel and drive for about 50 minutes to arrive in Mount Cook Village. From here (picture above) you then choose the walk you wish to take!
